Year in Review: Why 2017 Was Our Most Rewarding Year Yet

It’s the holiday season again, which means we’ve had our end-of-year holiday party, decorated the office, collected toys for our annual toy drive, prepared for our 40th anniversary in 2018, and reflected on key milestones in 2017.

Reaching New Heights

Year in Review: Reaching New Heights

Our team strives to exceed expectations on every project — no matter the size, client, or budget. We are proud of what we accomplished with our partners this year, including these milestones:

  • Maintained $400 million of construction: We continued to reach our revenue goals, thanks to our amazing clients who are constantly improving their communities with new retail centers, office spaces, and more. Your trust in us allows us to continue to grow and innovate alongside you.
  • Reached over 100 employees: At SBC, we are more than co-workers — we are a family with strong, shared values. Many of our employees have worked at SBC for over 10 years, and they provide guidance to help new team members learn and improve as they join our work family.
  • Worked on more than 20 structures: We are proud of each and every one of our completed projects from 2017. We balanced multiple projects at a time over the course of the year and executed each with an unwavering commitment to meet client demands and deliver each one on time. Highlights include 1440 Multiversity, which breathed new life into an old college campus in Scotts Valley, a 50,000 square foot LEED Gold building in Palo Alto, and ThinFilm, who contracted us build a Class 1,000 cleanroom and chemical treatment facility.

Navigating Roadblocks

Year in Review: Navigating Roadblocks

While 2017 has been a great year, it came with its fair share of challenges as well. While many of them were out of our control — such as an extremely rainy winter, code changes, and city permit delays — other setbacks are ones common to our industry, like manpower shortages and shifting schedules. But working through these challenges continued to teach us important lessons.

We believe in providing our clients with upfront and honest communication — this is our strongest tool for combatting the unexpected. Having a strong relationship with a client is a critical factor of success. We’ve been in the construction business for four decades, long enough to know that challenges can be overcome as long as we are proactive and communicative.

We continued to adapt how we estimate budgets and timelines. From using an open book, design-build approach, to ensuring we incorporate delay-days and contingency funds into a project timeline and budget, we are able to prepare our clients for unforeseen changes. When challenges do arise, we are able to adapt, pivot, and proceed to meet client expectations on time.

This year reminded us that our team is the key to success for every project. We’ve grown, offering capable and qualified people a rewarding career and our clients the best talent in the industry.

Looking to the Next 40 Years

Year in Review: Looking Ahead

Next year marks our 40th anniversary, and we have big plans. We will continue to invest in our team, our projects, and our services to help our clients build best-in-class spaces for their communities.

As 2017 draws to a close, we are proud to look back at 12 months of stunning work, exciting milestones, and rewarding partnerships. We want to say thank you for your continued support. As we celebrate the holiday season, we are constantly reminded of how grateful we are for everyone we work with.

To all of our clients, team members, and partners: Happy Holidays, and wishing you the best in 2018!
