Meet Theron Miller, the General Superintendent at South Bay Construction

Can you tell us what your role entails at SBC?

As the General Superintendent, I am responsible for overseeing the construction process from start to finish. I work with our Safety Officer and the many talented SBC Superintendents to ensure we provide a safe working environment by performing job walks to assess job status, schedule, subcontractor safety compliance, and any challenges that may arise during the building process. 

That sounds like a challenging role. How do you help mentor and train the junior supers?

I use my years of experience in shell and tenant improvement construction to help guide and teach the Junior Superintendents from job start-up to final inspections. Whether it’s helping with scheduling, job flow, or a lesson learned from my own experience, I try to give them the tools they need to succeed. I find that being patient, communicating clearly, and leading by example is essential to helping junior Superintendents to succeed. We also have a pool of great, seasoned Superintendents, that our juniors can reach out to for guidance. 

As a General Superintendent, what is the most important aspect of your job?

I believe that clear and calm communication with construction industry professionals is key to the success of any project. Effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page so that we can address any issues that may arise promptly. I believe that patience, critical thinking, and an understanding of the building process from start to finish are some unique skills I bring to my position.

Can you share some of your biggest accomplishments in your career with us?

Sure, one of the most significant achievements I have had with SBC was the construction of 1440 Multiversity in Scotts Valley. 

What do you find most exhilarating about your current role?

There are a few things that I find exhilarating about my current role. Firstly, I enjoy problem-solving and finding solutions to any issues that arise. Secondly, building relationships with SBC team members is something I take pride in. Lastly, being able to use my past experience to help solve current problems is fulfilling.

How did you find your way into the construction industry?

I am a third-generation carpenter, and my father was a spec home builder. I started running a framing crew at 18 and progressed from residential construction to commercial framing, retrofits, and on to my current position.

What motivates you in your career?

At this stage of my career, I am motivated by educating young construction professionals on the building process and how to avoid mistakes, minimize issues, and navigate the construction process. I started in construction as a “bags-on” carpenter. When I came to SBC, I was given an opportunity to learn and grow. I hope to help up-and-coming superintendents grow and realize their potential.  

What inspires you in your career or in life, in general?

To help our Superintendents build amazing structures, work through issues, and treat people the way I want to be treated is what inspires me in my career and in life.

Do you have any special certification/training you received?

I have received ten-plus years of safety training in performance safety.

What is it like working at South Bay Construction?

Working at SBC is a wonderful experience. I interact with great, dedicated, and committed people on a daily basis. SBC has a culture of support and understanding that I feel is unique to the building industry.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, so surfing has always been a huge part of my life. I also enjoy skateboarding, riding and racing dirt bikes, and snowboarding.
