Employee Spotlight: Marc Morgan

In this employee spotlight we spoke with Project Executive Marc Morgan on his role at SBC, current market shifts, how he found his way into construction, and more.

Meet Marc!

What do you do at SBC?

I work directly with developers from concept through completion of construction. My job is to assist, guide, and advise through precon. Once contracts are signed and permits issued, I provide oversight and leadership to our teams as they manage through the construction process all while interfacing with the client, understanding and managing expectations through the close out.

What happens when someone decides to work with you?

There’s a year or so of preconstruction. The first goal is to work through entitlements. Once the developer is confident entitlement will get approved, they often move forward to the next step called design development where they start to design the product. Then we work with them, side by side, until the completion of the project. My job is to help the developer realize their vision and turn a profit.

What are you working on right now?

We’re building a lot of life sciences buildings right now, the market is trending in that direction. Our developer clients have recognized this market opportunity and we’ve been busy with a lot of them.

Were there any market shifts with COVID?

We typically build a stream of class A office buildings, hotels, retail, and more. With the onset of COVID, there was a huge re-evaluation of occupancies which was one contributing factor to this market shift.

What’s important?

Client satisfaction. We pride ourselves on putting in the effort necessary to deliver on time and on budget.

What’s it like working at South Bay Construction?

This is a great place to work. Our industry is brutal, a tough business, with a lot of moving parts. At South Bay you know you’re working with nice people who share the same mindset and level of commitment.

How do you deal with the unexpected?

There’s always unexpected things. We know this. We find the best solution and execute.

How did you find your way into the construction industry?

My parents owned a small development company in the ‘70s and I started working summers on my father’s job sites at age 13. During that time, we lived in a house developed and built by my parent’s company and I thought it was really cool. After high school, I worked in the field for different companies doing different trades until age 34. At that time, I went back to school and completed my undergrad in business and transitioned out of the field and into the office.

What have you found surprising about working in this industry?

The evolution of technology used in our industry. I worked in construction prior to computers, the internet, and cell phones and have grown along with the introduction of those technologies into the industry. I often find myself having to exert additional specific energy to keep up with the technology.

What do you find most exhilarating about your current role?

I enjoy working with the clients participating in conversion of vision to real assets. A large part of my job is to work with teams who are managing construction. I enjoy providing leadership and helping them to grow in their individual abilities.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I like to spend as much time as possible with family and friends. During the summer months, I like to wakesurf with my friends. Also, I like to travel when the time permits.
